Until June: Road works around Te Whare Mānuka
Please allow more time if visiting
If you are visiting Te Whare Mānuka in the coming months, please allow extra travel time. While there is room to drop off guests at the rear of the building, parking is limited, and on street parking will be affected by these works.
If you have any pātai or need help to make your visit easier, please let us know. Phone us on (03) 553-1198.
Two large water pipe upgrades near Te Whare Mānuka are starting in March, and will take approximately four months.
Nelson City Council have advised us work to upgrade the main water pipe from Queen’s Gardens to Rutherford Street (Bridge Street East, Collingwood Street and Halifax Street) starts in March and runs until mid-June.
Impacts include:
- Detours and changes of routes
- No right turn out of Provincial Lane (the alley in between Te Whare Mānuka and the cafe) on to Bridge Street
- Loss of parking / closure of intersections at times
- Possible delays
Where is the work happening?
Bridge Street East
Bridge Street East will start in the first week of March 2025, with some minor digging to confirm the location of existing pipes before the main work gets underway. The pipe runs down the centre of the street so traffic can travel up and down Bridge Street (with the temporary removal of car parking). For safety reasons, vehicles will not be allowed to turn across the road when the road works are in the way.

Collingwood Street / Halifax Street:
The Collingwood/Halifax Street section will start in the last week of March 2025. This work will also allow two lanes of traffic to be travelling along the street, though some car parks may be temporarily unavailable as work is completed in that space.
Intersections may close
The most challenging part of this project is connecting the pipes across the intersections. This may require the intersections to be closed. In the case of the Bridge Street / Collingwood Street intersection, this work will take up to two weeks to complete. Detours will be in place, along with clear signage.

More information
This work is part of a larger project, called Bridge to Better.
