NIWA’s new 36-m research vessel Kaharoa II (see Ready for research | NIWA) will be conducting ten days of sea trials around the northwest coast of the South Island in January 2025.

The voyage will focus on testing the vessel and fishing equipment in order to take over the fisheries research duties of the old 28-metre vessel Kaharoa.

Whakatū visit Friday 24 January

Kaharoa II intends to make a port call into Nelson, which will give locals a chance to get a glimpse of the latest addition to the NIWA research fleet. 

Whānau are invited to participate in a guided tour onboard the new vessel on Friday 24 January 2025.
