Student opportunity: Virology and Antiviral Research

Kimer Med is a New Zealand-based biotechnology company. Their team of scientists, led by Dr Rishi Pandey, is developing broad-spectrum antivirals.

They currently have an opportunity for a student to join them for an exciting and rewarding summer - and a chance to make a real impact in the field of antiviral research.

Position: Studentship – Development of Cytopathic Effect (CPE) Reduction Assay

    • Duration: 10 weeks
    • Location: Kimer Med, 18 Elms Street, Stoke, Nelson
    • Start Date: TBC
    • Application Deadline: 15 September 2024

Are you a motivated and ambitious student with a passion for virology and drug development? Do you want to gain hands-on experience in cutting-edge antiviral research? We are excited to offer a 10-week summer studentship to work on the development of a cytopathic effect (CPE) reduction assay to study the viability of antiviral drug candidates.

    About the Project:

The selected student will be involved in a critical research project aimed at developing a robust CPE reduction assay. This assay is essential for evaluating the efficacy of potential antiviral drugs in reducing virus-induced cell damage. The project will provide a comprehensive experience in cell culture techniques, viral propagation, and quantitative analysis of antiviral activity.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Assist in the design and optimization of the CPE reduction assay.
    • Perform cell culture maintenance and viral infection experiments.
    • Conduct viability assays to evaluate antiviral efficacy.
    • Analyse data and present findings in regular lab meetings.
    • Collaborate with senior scientists and contribute to ongoing research projects.

    Qualifications:

    • Currently enrolled in a BSc/BVSc/MSc/MVSc/PhD program in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or a related field at a University or Polytechnic in New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdon, Europe, Canada, and United States.
    • Basic knowledge of cell culture, molecular biology, protein chemistry and virology is desirable.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
    • Enthusiastic and eager to learn in a fast-paced research environment.

    What We Offer:

    • Hands-on training and mentorship from experienced scientists.
    • Exposure to advanced techniques and state-of-the-art laboratory equipment.
    • An opportunity to contribute to impactful antiviral research.
    • A stipend to support living expenses during the studentship.
    • A supportive and collaborative research environment.

    How to Apply:

Interested candidates should send the following documents to rishi@kimermed.co.nz by 15 September 2024.

    • A cover letter explaining your interest in the position and relevant experience.
    • A current CV highlighting your academic achievements and skills.
    • Contact information for two academic or professional references.
